Toronto, ON – The Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation is pleased to announce the 2007 class of Garfield Weston Merit Scholarship for Colleges (GWMSC) winners. Hailing from across the country, these scholars display a desire to better the communities in which they live, while continuing to excel at numerous Canadian colleges.

Established in 1999 with the generous support of The W. Garfield Weston Foundation, these prestigious Canadian college scholarships are awarded annually to talented students who show promise of leadership, a strong dedication to their field of study and a commitment to their communities. The selection process for these scholarships is the most intensive and personalized in the country. Applicants are assessed through both individual and panel interviews by volunteer leaders from the business and academic community.

This year’s class of 50 scholars may each receive up to $50,000 in scholarship funding, which includes a stipend, tuition waiver and up to $3,500 in funding to arrange summer experience projects in Canada or abroad. In addition, the Foundation distributed 33 Regional Awards worth $4,000 and 29 Provincial Awards worth $2,500.

The 2007 winners come from varied backgrounds, but each has shown a dedication to bettering the world around them. Veronique Major, who pairs philanthropy with her passion for directing and editing film, has created a multi-media show, the proceeds of which benefited the underprivileged children in Madagascar. The scholarship will fund her studies in TV Production at Cégep de Jonquière. “I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to pursue my passion,” says Veronique. “I know that the more I learn, the more I will be able to give back to my community.”

“These college students have entrepreneurial spirits, and their energy and passion powers their contributions to Canadian society,” says Franca Gucciardi, Executive Director of the Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation, which administers the awards on behalf of The W. Garfield Weston Foundation. “I am confident that each 2007 scholar will bring about positive change with their compassion, perseverance and dedication.”
